The Royal College of Nursing archive is a unique collection of photographs capturing British nurses and nursing from the 1900s to the later 20th century. The images come from many sources: personal papers, official RCN group photographs, records of events such as graduations and prize-givings by early news services, or portraits by studio photographers.
The archive includes a terrific set of images from the First World War of invalided soldiers in temporary military hospitals throughout Britain and France digitised from glass negatives. There are also several of the Lady Hardinge Hospital for Wounded Indian Soldiers in Brockenhurst, whose peaceful location in the New Forest and proximity to Southampton made it ideal to treat injured service personnel from the Western Front.
